The performance of your wood burning stove will be directly related to the quality of the firewood that you burn.

Whilst the availability of wood is good, the increased demand over the last couple of seasons has resulted in a shortage of seasoned firewood, as well as an increase in the amount of softwood in any one load. There has also been an increase in suppliers providing log without the facility to season the wood properly prior to delivery. Many log suppliers are supplying logs from trees that were felled in the same season in which they are being burnt, and therefore have a high moisture content. As a result, the following problems will occur:

Your wood burning stove is difficult to get started
Your stove is slow to produce heat once it has started
There is a tendency for the glass to ‘black-up’ in use
Tarring of the chimney leading to blockages in the flue
Requirement for more frequent sweeping
Quicker re-fueling time due to running the stove harder, air controls open
Low firebox temperatures resulting in more smoke produced but not being burnt, giving less heat output.
Heat is wasted drying the wood out in the wood burning stove

The upshot of this is that many more low quality logs are needed to produce the same output as high grade kiln dried logs. So whilst they are cheaper to buy you will use twice as many or more depending on your woodburner. You also will have to unload and stack twice as much per season!
